David Westrick, a spokesman for FedEx Ground, said the new facility would open in September of 2007. The facility will cover nearly 130,000 square feet in Morrisville, Westrick added.
A general contractor has yet to be selected, Westrick said.
The facility means more jobs, too. It will be larger than a distribution center in Durham that will be closed when the Morrisville center opens. The new one will employ more than the 180 people now working in Durham, but Westrick said how many jobs would be added is not known at this point.
"We're growing," said Westrick. "We need more space."
The Morrisville facility is part of a $1.6 billion plan to expand or upgrade facilities around the country, he added. "We are going to relocate some of our more than 300 facilities," he said.
FedEx Ground trucks are emblazoned with a green FedEx logo rather than the bright orange logo associated with the air delivery service.
The subsidiary of FedEx generates $2 billion a year in revenues and employs 35,000 people in the United States and Canada.
