Authorities have charged 31-year-old Latasha Gravely with second-degree murder, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired and other charges.
Gravely was arrested after a three-car accident that happened shortly after midnight at the U.S. 1 South exit ramp for N. Horner Blvd. Investigators said Gravely exited onto the ramp at a high rate of speed, rear-ending a vehicle driven by 59-year-old Margaret Pitt of Raeford and then hitting a car driven by Pitt's sister, 49-year-old Frances Barns of Sanford.
Gravely allegedly left the scene after the collisions, and was located a short distance in a parking lot, authorities said.
Pitt, who authorities said was returning home after her brother's funeral, was pinned inside her vehicle and later died from her injuries. A passenger inside her vehicle was also injured and was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, where his condition is unknown.
Barnes and her mother, 83-year-old Estelle Blue of Chesterfield, SC, were also taken to Central Carolina Hospital with unknown injuries. Authorities said Gravely also sustained minor injuries in the crash.
