Storms Leave Mark In Area Counties

RALEIGH, N.C. — Scattered thunderstorms moved across the Triangle area Wednesday afternoon, bringing periods of heavy rain and strong winds and leaving scattered damage.

Wild winds whipped through the Tradewinds community in Harnett County late Wednesday afternoon, leaving behind a mess. The severe storm snapped fences and trees, blew siding and shingles off homes and tore sheds to bits.

In all about 15-20 homes were damaged in the neighborhood. Emergency crews put up tarps, and neighbors helped neighbors pick up the broken pieces late Wednesday.

In the end, all were grateful no one was hurt.

"Everyone in the neighborhood is safe and that's really all that matters," said resident Tracy Sanders.

The wind also blew the roof off a strip mall in the Overhills area. Shingles dangled over the edge of the building, but most of the roofing landed in the parking lot. No one was hurt.

Elsewhere:

A house trailer on Hicksboro Road in Henderson was reportedly demolished when high winds overturned it.

Downed trees and power lines on Highway 158 led authorities to temporarily shut down a three-mile stretch from the Highway 158 bypass to Poplar Creek Road between Henderson and Oxford.

Progress Energy reported that over 100 customers were still without power at 10 p.m. Wednesday. There is no estimate on when power will be completely restored. Thousands of customers temporarily lost power in Cary, Siler City and Henderson.

The National Weather Service reported trees down on or near the following locations:

A home near Highway 158 in Henderson.

Stem and Cornwell and State Route 56 near Butner in Granville County.

Coleman Loop Road

in Hillsborough.

Old U.S. 1

and New Hill Holleman Road near Apex.

Robbins

in Moore County.

Wind damage in the Tradewinds subdivision off of Elliot Bridge road in Spring Lake.

The National Weather Service said a cluster of strong storms spread southward through the late afternoon hours. There is a chance of more thunderstorms through midnight Wednesday, and a small chance of more storms on Thursday afternoon.
