Last week, a person was shot outside Club Chi-Hi -- the second near the club in a month's time. Most recently, the violence resulted in two people being taken to a local hospital after an alleged altercation inside Club Avalon.
Sandra Reaves claims her son, Michael Reaves, and a friend were beat up inside the club early Sunday morning by a group of UNC athletes. Both were being treated for injuries at UNC Hospitals on Monday and were expected to make a full recovery.
Chapel Hill police are investigating the allegation, but said on Monday that they did not have any suspects.
Shortly after the fight inside the club, police responded to a fight outside where shots were fired.
Capt. Jackie Carden with the Chapel Hill Police Department said the town wants more law enforcement visibility in the downtown area and that five new positions were recently approved by the Town Council.
The approval will allow for the creation of a permanent force of 12 full-time officers that are dedicated to the downtown business district.
Police hope to have the five additional officers hired, trained and patrolling the streets by the first of the year.
