"We just feel it was always a fun place to play, and we are sorry to see it go, actually," said golfer David Bailey.
The golf course is closing, likely so the land can be developed. When Cheviot Hills was built in 1930, Capitol Boulevard was a two-lane country road. Now it's one of the busiest thoroughfares in and out of Raleigh. Developers said that the course is standing in the way of progress.
The owner won't say what he's going to do with the land. Developers estimate the property could bring up to $200,000 an acre, putting the price tag at $30 million. The cost for golfers is the loss of a $16 round.
"I've been coming out here since 1989, all the way from Cary," said golfer Paul Masouras "This is my second home. I hate to say that. I'm going to miss it dearly."
"Progress and change are two things that happen," said golfer Bud Esperseth.
Despite the closing of three other golf courses in the Raleigh area recently, there are at least six courses open and competing for players.
