DURHAM, N.C. — Carrboro's former fire chief was laid to rest Wednesday.

Dozens of mourners filled Durham Memorial Baptist Church for Rodney Murray, 58, who was found dead inside a Cary hotel room on Saturday. His cause of death is still under investigation.

A firefighting veteran, Murray spent 37 years in uniform, serving the last decade as Carrboro's fire chief. He resigned in March after health problems and a series of arrests.

In May, he pleaded guilty to several charges stemming from allegedly harassing and stalking his former girlfriend.

Friends though, said Murray should be remembered for all the good he did in life.

"He was a faithful servant of Chapel Hill and Carrboro for many years," Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton said on Sunday. "He made some mistakes in his life, but he did a lot of things right."
