On June 7, a 76-year-old returned home to find intruders waiting for him in his home near Littleton. On June 15, a 56-year-old was sleeping when strangers barged into his west Halifax County home.
Another incident occurred on June 21 when an 80-year-old mistakenly answered a knock at the door at his home near Roanoke Rapids.
"It tugs at your heart when someone is elderly. They are basically a week apart from each other," said Maj. Wes Tripp, of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
Tripp believes the home invasions were carried out by two or three men who waited until around midnight to strike.
In all three home invasions, authorities said the thieves were after whatever cash and valuables they could find. Investigators said the victims were tied up and severely beaten. The Roanoke Rapids victim remains in a Greenville hospital, and investigators said leads are slim.
"We are basically at ground zero right now. We are devoting time to investigate all three of these," Tripp said. "We do have people of interest. We are following up on leads."
Authorities will not reveal the names of the victims because of personal security reasons. No suspects have been arrested. There is a reward of up to $1,000 for information that will lead to an arrest.
