Evan Greco was headed home for dinner Wednesday in the Grissom community when he was involved in a hit-and-run incident on Bruce Garner Road, authorities said.
State Highway Patrol troopers have no eyewitnesses or description of the vehicle. They estimated the vehicle was traveling at 50 mph when it hit the teen.
"We have no information whatsoever," Trooper Brent Montgomery said, noting that authorities hope the community can produce leads in the case. "In tight-knit communities like this, a lot of times they are able to come up with information that can help the Highway Patrol."
Greco was thrown about 135 feet and suffered broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a ruptured spleen. Troopers said he was lucky not to be hit again before a passer-by stopped and got him off the road.
He was listed in fair condition at Duke Hospital Thursday evening.
Troopers said the teen was riding in the middle of the road on a bicycle without reflective gear. They said it would have been hard for the driver to see him, but they and Greco's relatives said the driver still should have stopped to check on the boy.
"For someone to leave a child to die in the ditch, I can't believe it. I can't believe it," said the boy's stepfather, Shannon Young.
"This is something that is inexcusable, and we really need everyone's help to figure out who did this and get them off the road," said Greco's grandfather, Warren Young. "It's really horrendous to leave a child like that."
