Franklin County teen found after Silver Alert
A 15-year-old boy with autism who went missing late Friday in Franklin County walked back home on his own early Saturday, Franklin County authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedJoshua Michael Potter, who went missing from his home on Raymond Tharington Road around 5 p.m. Friday, wandered in the woods for hours overnight before coming back home, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Other than being wet from head to toe and cold, Potter was unhurt and communicating well with his parents Saturday morning, authorities said.
The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert for Potter just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, canceling it less than five hours later when Potter returned home.
Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.
It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
