Authorities File Charges Against Substitute Cumberland PE Teacher, Mother

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities have filed more charges against a substitute teacher accused of attacking a student, but he is not the only one in trouble. His mother, who was a full-time teacher, is accused of trying to cover-up one of the alleged rapes.

Daniel Moore Jr. was charged Wednesday with attempted statuatory rape, taking indecent liberties with a child and first-degree kidnapping.

Moore had been a substitute physical education teacher at Anne Chestnutt Middle School when he was initally charged in February for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl at the school. Authorities say another alleged victim came forward after hearing about the allegations.

The alleged victim told detectives the incident happened at the Moore family home on Heartland Drive, when Daniel Moore still lived there.

Authorities say Janice Moore, Daniel's mother, faces charges of obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact. Detectives said Janice Moore, who is a health and physical education teacher at the school, tried to destroy evidence involving the child in the first case.

"We send our children here and we expect them not to go through things like that, so I think it was her job and duty not to obstruct justice," parent Valerie Parker said.

Janice Moore, who resigned from her position Monday, is being held on a $100,000 bond. Daniel Moore's bond is set at $500,000.
