Durham Woman, Child Critically Injured In Traffic Accident

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman and her 3-year-old son were critically injured in a one-vehicle accident Sunday night on Valley Drive in northern Durham.

According to Durham police, Celeste Rozinna Happoldt of 2146 Charles Street was driving on Valley Drive toward Holt School Road when she lost control of her car in a curve near Williams Way around 5:22 p.m.

Happoldt's 1999 Honda Civic spun clockwise and struck a curb. The car continued to spin, and the front right door slammed into a tree.

The car then struck a second tree, flipped on to its left side and spun around into the street, where it came to rest on its side.

Happoldt and her 3-year-old son, Timothy C. McMillan II, both suffered critical injuries. They were taken to Duke University Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators said McMillan was in a child safety seat when the accident occurred.

Speed was a factor in the accident, according to investigator S.K. McHenry of the Traffic Services Division.

No charges had been filed Sunday night, but the investigation was continuing.
