A wind gust of 46 miles per hour was reported in Southern Pines. Nearly 9,000 outages were reported from Southern Pines into South Carolina around 2 p.m. Tuesday, but the number was down to around 3,800 a couple of hours later.
There were 906 outages reported in the northern region served by Carolina Power and Light, 820 of those in Dunn.
The weather office posted high wind warnings for Edgecombe, Johnston, Nash, Wayne, Wilson, Greene, Martin and Pitt counties.
The mountains also could see high winds Wednesday to go with alittle ice or snow.
As of 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Progress Energy reported 9,582 outages:
Fuquay Varina - 200
Zebulon - 174
Dunn Selma area - 5,400
Southern Pines 3,308
Sanford - 500
