DMV Authorities Seize $500,000 Worth Of Marijuana During Traffic Stop

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A routine traffic stop in Cumberland County led to a large seizure of marijuana.

Officials with the Division of Motor Vehicles said officers arrested a man they believe to be a major drug trafficker Monday on northbound Interstate 95 in Cumberland County.

The traffic stop started as a routine pullover for a possibly overweight vehicle at exit 41.

While reviewing the driver's registration to determine how much the vehicle was licensed to carry, officers noticed that the driver appeared to be nervous. The officers requested and received consent to search the vehicle.

After the search, authorities seized about 500 pounds of marijuana, which would have a street value of $500,000.

Authorities say the driver was from Mission, Texas, and he was en route to Norfolk, Va., carrying military goods. Upon discovery of the marijuana, he was taken into custody by DMV Enforcement and charged with trafficking marijuana by transportation and possession.
