Midway Airlines Gets Third Chance To Earn Wings

Midway Airlines stopped operations on Sept. 12, 2001, but began again in December 2001. The airline then stopped operating again this past July.

Under the judge's ruling, Midway will begin operating Jan. 1 as a regional jet carrier for US Airways. Midway's white and yellow colors will be replaced by US Airways colors, and officials said it will be a much smaller airline.

"Well, we have about 35 on staff now, and ultimately, we'll get to about 300," said Bob Ferguson, chief executive officer of Midway Airlines.

Officials said two planes will be used and fly between RDU International and Washington National Airport.

As part of the deal, US Airways will get 31.5 percent stock ownership in Midway. The airline still needs $5 million financing and Ferguson said he has several commitments.

Midway's 50-seat regional jets will operate from US Airways gates at Terminal A at RDU International.
