Durham Woman In Critical Condition After SUV Collides With Truck

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon following an accident in her neighborhood.

Katelyn Latta, 17, was trapped in her car for about 30 minutes. She was then transported by Life Flight to Duke Medical Center, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Police said that Latta's sport utility vehicle was hit by a tractor trailer about 11 a.m. Wednesday on Sherron Road, off Highway 98 in Durham County.

Both vehicles were totaled. The truck driver wasn't hurt, and no charges were filed at the scene.

Police said Latta was traveling from Scheer Avenue, making a left onto Sherron about six houses from her home, when she drove into the path of the truck. The truck rammed into the driver's side of Latta's vehicle.

Latta's vehicle overturned. The truck ended up in a ditch.

Police said they don't believe speed or alcohol played a role in the accident. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Sherron Road was shut down for more than three hours.

The crash was still being investigated late Wednesday afternoon.
