GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The military has a tough problem to combat: new statistics show more men and women in uniform die in car accidents than in training and combat combined. As a result, the Armed Forces is now joining forces with a nationwide crackdown on seat belt violators.
Operation ABC Mobilization is taking place at dozens of installations, including Pope Air Force Base. Police are checking for seat belt violators and writing tickets.
If an uniformed officer is ticketed for a seat belt violation, they are required to report it to their commander. Violators can face anything from verbal counseling to a written reprimand.
Last year, more than 320 military personnel died in car crashes.
