In a salute to freedom, the 82nd Airborne's All-American Chorus performed Monday at the 2002 Veterans Breakfast. The event, held at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, honored veterans young and old.
"To me, it's important to recognize because some of us are still fighting the war. I was in Desert Storm and Somalia and that was very devastating," said Sgt. Barbara Fleming, of the U.S. Army.
For 79-year-old Aaron Fussell, the ceremony is bittersweet. During World War II, Fussell served in the 203rd Field Artillery Battalion. On Monday, Fussell received a medal for his service in the U.S. Army -- a time he says he was plagued by life-and-death situations.
"There was one night we were bombed and shelled all night long. The Germans kept coming at us," Fussell said. "I was scared. Anyone tells you otherwise, they're lying."
The early morning rain also did not stop the Veterans Day parade at the state Capitol. Many veteran said Monday was more than just a day off. It was a day set aside to remember those who have put their lives on the line and those who continue to serve in the U.S. military.
