At Ireland Drive Middle School, students are now Ground Truth Observers for the CERES satellite. The satellite helps scientists figure out how clouds heat and cool the earth.
At the exact time the satellite flies over Cumberland County, students record information on temperature, clouds and ground cover. They then e-mail the information to NASA.
"Our students of today are going to be the NASA scientists of tomorrow. The work that our students are providing allows NASA to verify information they are getting from the Ceres satellite is actually happening on ground," assistant principal Dr. Nancy Edwards said.
NASA has formed many relationships with Fayetteville schools to prepare for
Festival of Flight
in 2003.
