Fayetteville Woman Hospitalized After Beating

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 72-year-old owner of a dry cleaner is in the hospital after a violent robbery and attack.

Police said Grace Overby parked her car in front of Hamont Cleaners at 9:30 a.m. Friday when two people assaulted her. Police said one of the suspects had a gun while another had a knife.

Police said Overby was beaten on her legs, back, arms and hands. Police said the suspects took her purse and money from the cash register.

David Elliott, one of Overby's longtime customers, said he could not believe someone would do this to her.

"Her husband has been trying to get her to retire here for years now, and this is what has been keeping her alive -- just coming here working," he said. "I hate to see her get beaten like that."

Overby is listed in fair condition at the hospital. She and her husband will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Saturday.
