Inspectors Checking Rides, Food Stands At State Fair

Inspectors from the state Department of Labor,

Amusements of America

and an independent company have been looking at the rides since Monday to ensure their safety. Health inspectors are also looking at the food stands to ensure the food will be safe.

"They are all going to be good to go by tomorrow when the fair opens. When they say they are good, you can trust that. You can count on it," state Labor Secretary Cherie Berry said.

"We inspect everything from the ground up -- nuts, bolts, electrical, the passenger-carrying devices, seat restraints, that type of thing -- we look all that stuff. We look at it from A to Z," inspector Jonathan Brooks said.

This will be the first year for new Midway operator Amusements of America. Two months ago, Re-mix, a ride from Amusements of America,

broke loose in Ohio

, injuring two people. That ride will not be featured during this year's State Fair.

Officials said rides will be checked every day until the closing of the fair.

Officials said security at this year's state fair will be tight like last year. Patrons can expect backpacks and pocketbooks to be searched. Officials also said weapons will not be permitted.
