Cumberland Child Hospitalized With Rare Form Of Tuberculosis

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fort Bragg is waiting to hear if any more cases of Miliary

tuberculosis

have shown up on post.

A 3-year-old was admitted to the hospital with symptoms in August. Further testing at UNC Hospitals confirmed the illness.

Nearly 40 children and staff members at Cook Child Development Center were tested for exposure. The results are not back.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, miliary TB is rare and accounts for less than three percent of all tuberculosis cases.

Large amounts of bacteria spread through the body by the blood or lymph system. It can reach the the heart, bones, and spinal cord. While it can be life-threatening, most patients respond well to treatment.

Treatment usually requires up to one year of medication.
