Sheriff Deputies Hope To Improve Relationship In Durham's Latino Community

Deputies brought the mobile command center to an apartment complex where dozens of Latino families live. Deputies gave out buttons and stickers to the kids and let them check out their motorcycles. They also talked to parents about staying safe behind the wheel.

"Latino children are 72 percent more likely to be injured in a motor vehicle crash. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Latino people ages 1 through 44," said Deputy Raheem Abdul Aleem.

Deputies want to improve the relationship between their department and the Latino community. They say Latinos are often distrustful of police because of negative experiences in their native countries.
