Experts say there are a few lesser-known ways to conserve water such as checking the date stamped inside your toilet. If it is before 1993, chances are it is not water-efficient.
Experts say placing a bottle of water in the tank can save up to 10 gallons a day. Cary is offering a $4 rebate for residents who replace their flush equipment.
To test for leaks in the toilet, place dye in the tank. If the dye runs into the bowl, that means that there is a leak.
Experts also say limiting the amount of times you run the dishwasher and washing machine helps save water. They also suggest only running them with a full load. Cary hopes to cut total water use 20 percent by 2015.
Incidentally, Cary residents who hoped to reseed their lawns this fall are going to be disappointed. Town officials normally issue watering permits in September so homeowners can start new grass. However, with the drought, no permits will be issued.
The town should have an updated policy in place by the end of the week.
