Durham Residents Meet Police Chief Finalists

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — People who live in Durham met face to face with the three finalists for the position of Durham police chief Monday night.

The three candidates are Bill Carcara, Chief of the Jefferson County Police in Louisville, Ky., Greg Watkins, a retired deputy chief from Kansas City, Mo., and Steve Chalmers, Durham's acting police chief.

The men answered questions for nearly two hours. All three said stopping drugs takes the entire community -- not just police. All of the finalists are also strong supporters of community policing.

Most people in attendance said they want a police chief who is highly visible in the community and will not leave after a year or two.

Durham hopes to name the new chief in the next seven to 10 days.
