Veterans Take Special Solace In Fourth Of July

For many Americans, the images and sounds of World War II are nothing but boldface letters in a textbook. For some veterans in Cary, though, World War II helped shape their lives.

Both Cleve Cox and Paul Mize know firsthand the horrors of war. Cox received a medal for valor and a Purple Heart for his service in the U.S. Army. As a machine gunner, Mize was wounded fighting the Nazis.

"You learn quickly. You learn to take care of yourself and your buddies. Combat is no picnic," Cox said.

"There's nothing like it. War is awful. There's confusion, mayhem. I hope I never have to do it again," Mize said.

Both men look forward to America's birthday every year. They enjoy celebrating their roles in preserving America.

"I'm proud of my country and I salute the flag every day of my life," Cox said.
