Raleigh fire officials have been busy inspecting fireworks stands looking for illegal fireworks. Once officials find them, they are confiscated.
In North Carolina, illegal fireworks are anything that leaves the ground, spins or makes a loud noise.
"There's no control and they leave the ground and they spin and you don't know where they're going," said Assistant Chief Larry Standford of the Raleigh Fire Department. "They could land in a pile of leaves or a pile of trash, or the ones that leave the ground could land on top of a house or in a gutter where it's full of leaves and catch a house on fire."
If someone is caught with illegal fireworks, they could be charged with a misdemeanor and be fined. Because of the state drought situation, personal fireworks are banned in Spring Lake and Durham. Raleigh officials are also asking residents not to use them.
