Durham Day Care Center, Senior Center Shut Down After Positive E. Coli Test

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A tainted well water warning at a Durham County day care center is growing. That same well gives water to a senior center.

The Little Beaver Childcare and Little River Senior Center in Bahama will be closed for the rest of the week after E. coli was found during a well water inspection.

Health officials say children and the elderly are the most susceptible to E. coli.

"When we find that there is a contaminated well with E. coli, the risk is certainly there," health director Brian Letourneau said. "It could be a big deal if it wasn't managed appropriately. We want to make sure no one was at risk from this contaminated well."

Before the facilities can reopen, the well must be cleaned and have its water tested again.

So far, no illnesses have been reported.
