Cumberland County's Transportation Advisory Committee has approved a proposal to close Bragg Boulevard. Planners have been working on the idea for months.
After the events of Sept. 11, Fort Bragg wanted to increase security on post. City leaders felt turning Bragg Boulevard into an internal route would be the best way.
By 2009, motorists heading north on Bragg Boulevard will come to either a military checkpoint on post or they will be diverted to the new Fayetteville Outer Loop to Murchison Road. Motorists coming from Spring Lake will have to turn right on Butner Road or take a new overpass to Fayetteville.
Although some people believe the plan is a plus for Fort Bragg, others are concerned about what it would mean to Spring Lake businesses.
"There are a lot of small businesses like ours. If they don't have the traffic, I don't know if they are going to make it or not," business owner Lore Timmons said.
Transportation planners said the new overpass will re-route traffic back into Spring Lake, so they said those businesses will not be affected during lunchtime. A transportation planning committee will meet in September and will discuss a new phase for the project.
