Officials decided to shut down one of the wells because the town's water table is so low. Officials said that shutdown may be problematic down the road.
"If there is a problem, we don't have a backup right now. If we run out of water, then the buck stops here," Newton Grove Mayor Gerald Darden said.
Town officials are asking residents to comply with voluntary restrictions such as not washing their cars and not watering their lawns. They also said that the situation should not be considered as a crisis.
"I think we have the same amount of water on earth as we have always had. We just need to manage it better," water system operator Jim Ballance said.
Officials said the Newton Grove is using more than 40,000 gallons of water a day than usual. Next year, the town plans to tap into the county's water supply.
