"We are disappointed that D. will not have the opportunity to finish hisplaying career here at Duke," head coach Carl Franks said. "He hasplayed an important role in our football program these last two seasons.We will do everything possible to assist him in completing his footballeligibility at another institution, possibly at an NAIA school. We wishhim the best in his future endeavors and hope he can still complete hisdegree requirements to graduate from Duke."
"This is an unfortunate situation under difficult circumstances," Bryantsaid. "I have enjoyed my time here at Duke and have made greatrelationships with many people. I will certainly miss my teammates andwish them the best of luck. I hope to play college football at anotherschool this fall and return to Duke in the future to earn my degree."
In 22 career games with the Blue Devils, Bryant completed 316-of-642passes for 3,902 yards with 16 touchdowns. On Duke's career charts, heranks sixth in pass attempts, seventh in pass completions, seventh inpassing yards, eighth in total offense (3,821 yards) and ninth intouchdown passes.
Bryant, who started 18 career contests at quarterback, holds the schoolrecord for consecutive pass completions with 16 set on November 11, 2000at N.C. State.
As a junior in 2001, Bryant hit on 187-of-384 pass attempts for 2,454yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2000, he was 129-of-258 throwing thefootball for 1,448 yards and five scores.
The loss of Bryant leaves four quarterbacks on Duke's 2002 roster insophomores Chris Dapolito, Adam Smith and Chris Wispelwey and incomingfreshman Mike Schneider.
