Around 1:20 a.m. Monday, Cary police officers responded to two 911 calls for help with a cat that was attacking residents of Hidden Oaks apartments off N.E. Maynard Road. Erica Lynn Hughes, 23, and Michael Trussel, 26, reported being bitten and scratched by the feral female calico cat.
Officials with the Cary Police Department took the cat into custody shortly after arriving at the scene. The cat, which subsequently died, was taken to the state lab for testing that same day.
Tests for rabies came back positive Tuesday. Both Hughes and Trussel will undergo treatment. Officials are also posting fliers in the apartment complex advising residents of the confirmation of a rabid animal in their vicinity.
This is the second rabid cat captured this year in Cary.
