The deputy stopped a pickup truck owned by Dennis Logner, the dogs' owner, in Efland earlier this week after it was found to have a stolen license plate. After stopping the truck, the deputy found a number of stolen motorcycles, along with Logner's dogs Cisco and Roscoe in the back seat.
The driver of the truck, Charles Legrand, claimed he was just watching the pit bulls as a favor.
Both dogs are now at the Orange County animal shelter.
"We were shocked that they were found. We figured that they were long gone, but we are very relieved that they are back in custody because we were worried about where they were," shelter director Laura Walters said.
In April, the two dogs got loose and attacked a Chapel Hill woman and her dog. A few weeks later, one of the dogs attacked another dog. They were placed in the animal shelter, but then someone broke into the animal shelter and stole both dogs. Logner also disappeared at the same time.
The animal shelter is now equipped with 24-hour surveillance equipment.
"We don't expect them to get out again," Walters said.
There will be a court hearing in two weeks to determine the fate of both dogs. An arrest warrant is still out for Logner after he failed to appear in court to answer to charges.
Authorities believe he may be hiding out in Myrtle Beach.
