Coalition Established To Support Statewide Lottery

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A group formed to help insure passage of a lottery in North Carolina is up and running now that the General Assembly is in session.

The Education Lottery Coalition will use volunteers and donations to sell the state on a need for a lottery.

Organizers point to the big draw of the lottery in North Carolina's neighboring states.

"The interesting thing I find about the state of North Carolina is that we already have a lottery, but our lottery sends its proceeds to Georgia and to Virginia and soon to Tennessee," said Mark Erwin of the Education Lottery Coalition.

The Coalition estimates North Carolina residents spend about $250 million a year playing the lottery in other states.
