RALEIGH, N.C. — Work on the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stairs is scheduled to begin next week. Brackets, risers and posts will all be repaired.
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was shut down last June because of safety concerns.
Due to safety concerns, the National Park Service closed the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to climbing by the public on June 11, 2001, when a small support segment from the cast iron, spiral stairway dislodged and fell.
Although the lighthouse was open to the public at the time, the falling segment did not strike any visitors.
The repair project will cost more than $500,000.
More than 200,000 people each year visit the famous landmark. It was built on North Carolina's Outer Banks in 1870.
