Harnett County leaders dump landfill proposal; residents cheer
Harnett County residents erupted into cheers Monday night when, after several hours of debate, the county Board of Adjustment voted against a proposed landfill off N.C. Highway 24/27 between Cameron and the Johnsonville community.
Posted — UpdatedThe board sided with people living near the site, where Sandhills Environmental had planned to use a 370-acre former sand mine as a regional landfill.
Supporters of the landfill said it would bring $2 million in fees to the county, but residents said the economic benefits were not enough to counteract their concerns about health, contamination, property values and the community's image.
Renee Harris, who opposed the landfill, said the vote made her feel euphoric.
"(I feel) fantastic. We spoke and they listened and that's all you can ask for," she said. "This shows you that when a community galvanizes and comes together, this is what can happen."
