Authorities Make Arrest In Tarboro Shooting; Search Continues For Second Suspect

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office says T.K. Knight, a running back for Tarboro High School, was discovered around 4 a.m. Sunday in a mobile home park near Tarboro. He died at the hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities believe Knight knew his attacker, but he was not the intended target.

"I'm sure he was familiar with him because all of his people are from the same community. As far as socialization. I don't know if he had any association with this gentleman or not," Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said.

Authorities arrested DeShawn Murphy Monday afternoon and charged him with accessory after the fact. Authorities are still looking for the alleged gunman, Marvin Watkins.

Family members said Knight had dreams of playing for the Washington Redskins.

"He was very easy to get along with. He had a lot of goals just like any teenager does in high school," said Curtis Knight, T.K.'s brother.

"He was planning on going to college. He was just a very loving person. Someone we love and we are going to miss," said Jarvis Pettiway, T.K.'s uncle.

A couple of months ago, one of T.K. uncles was shot in Baltimore. His killer is still on the loose.

A team of social workers were at Tarboro High School to help students cope with the loss of one of their classmates.

"They are in shock and disbelief, trying to make some sense out of something like this, but they are supporting each other and trying to take care of one another. We have had some community volunteers come in and work with the students also," school social worker Carol Cobb said.

Knight was set to graduate in just two weeks. His funeral will be Saturday in the gymnasium at Tarboro High School.
