State To Release School Report Cards On May 22

Gov. Mike Easley announced preliminary information Thursday on what parents can expect from the report, which will be issued on May 22.

The report is a comprehensive look at individual school's performance level in relation to the state's expectations.

"Not just how your child is performing at school, but how your school is performing in relation to others in the district and others in the state so you will know what an A means in relation to other schools and other students all across North Carolina," Easley said.

Parents will be able to compare their children's school to other schools in the district and the state.

"I would like to know if the teachers are qualified to teach the classes they're teaching. That's important," said parent Michelle Wood said.

Every child in the state will be given a report to take home.

North Carolina is one year ahead of the federal requirement for states to provide the report cards by 2003.
