FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police are investigating the shooting death of a Fort Bragg soldier found outside a Fayetteville hotel Wednesday night.

Officials at the Army post confirmed Thursday that the man was a soldier. His identity, however, has not been released.

Police responding to a report of gunshots at the Innkeeper Hotel at 1720 Skibo Road found the man around 11 p.m. lying between two vehicles. He had been shot in the head.

The hotel's manager said the victim was not staying at the hotel.

“Our detectives are following up on every lead that they come across," Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Gavin MacRoberts said. "They're going where the investigation leads them at this time, but we don't have anyone we're identifying this time as a person of interest in this case.”

MacRoberts said police were called to the same hotel two hours earlier Wednesday evening after a woman reported hearing gunshots and seeing someone running from the scene.

It was unclear if police found anything while responding to that call, but investigators believe the report is related to the 11 p.m. shooting.
