According to the
U.S. Census Bureau
, Wake County grew by more than 27,000 people in a 15-month period. Those numbers were recorded between April 1, 2000 and July 1, 2001.
That increase ranks 21st out of more than 3,000 counties nationwide. Over the same period, statewide population grew by 109,000 to just over 8.1 million.
Deputy County Manager Joe Durham said he thinks Wake County's population will soon overtake Mecklenburg County's population.
"That will probably occur within the next 10 years. That's why we are projecting by the 2010 census, we will be the largest county in the state," Durham said.
County planners predict Wake's population will hit 1 million people in 18 years.
