Cisco and Roscoe are back in the custody of Orange County Animal Control. Last month, the pit bulls slipped out of their pen, bit Kae Enright and mauled her pug. The pug spent four days in the N.C. State Veterinary Hospital.
"He had puncture wounds everywhere, blood everywhere, a big tear in the skin [where] he was gasping for breath, breathing laboriously and just in shock," Enright said.
The pit bulls were returned to the owner after Animal Control officials approved new fencing around their pen. Then on Monday, Chapel Hill police found the dogs on the loose in a parking lot. One of them had attacked another dog.
Officials believe the dogs got into the house, jumped out of a window and took off.
"We were all disappointed the animals got back out. We felt that the owner was very cooperative and he had made every effort to ensure they didn't get out, [but] they did," Laura Walter of the Orange County Animal Control said. "I don't know if it's just a fluke or what, but unfortunately they did and we'll just have to deal with it from here."
The pit bulls will stay locked up until a judge decides what to do with them and their owner. The court hearing for Ralph Logner, the dogs' owner, is set for May 20.
A judge can fine Logner up to $500 and could order that the animals be destroyed if they are declared too dangerous.
