RALEIGH, N.C. — Local Boy Scouts may have to earn an extra merit badge for raising money. The Triangle United Way is considering cutting some of their funding. If approved at an April 23 board meeting, the cuts would take effect by June 2003.
The exclusion appears to be over philosophy, instead of economics. The Triangle United Way has an anti-discrimination policy, which contradicts the Boy Scouts' national policy to ban homosexuals.
The decision could cost Boy Scouts in Wake, Durham, and Orange counties about $300,000, or 15 percent of their budget.
The United Way will still allow donors to designate money specifically to the scouts.
