Stretch Of Hillsborough Street Closed For Bridge Repair

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Road crews have closed the 90-year-old, crumbling Hillsborough Street Bridge in order to remove it and replace it with a new structure.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said motorists need to be aware of the following changes.

During construction, Hillsborough Street will be closed from West Street to Glenwood Avenue. Also, Edenton Street will be changed to a two-lane one-way street from Dawson Street to West Street and will be closed from West Street to Hillsborough Street. Access to businesses in the work zone will be maintained at all times.

During construction, Hillsborough Street Bridge motorists will be rerouted to Morgan Street. Morgan Street will temporarily accommodate two-way traffic between Dawson and Saint Mary's streets. No parking will be allowed on Morgan Street from Saint Mary's Street to Dawson Street. No parking will be allowed on West Street Monday through Friday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Pavement markings on Hillsborough, Morgan, Edenton, Dawson, Harrington and West streets and Glenwood Avenue have been modified to accommodate new traffic patterns. There will be signal and utility work during the project, including new signals on Jones Street at West Street and Glenwood Avenue.

The project is expected to take at least 18 months to complete.
