The incident happened after Wake County Sheriff Deputy Stan Wilson pulled 22-year-old Russell Brown over on Mitchell Mill Road.
Investigators said Brown pulled out a gun when Wilson approached his car. Wilson then fired four shots at the tires of Brown's car.
Investigators said Brown fled the scene in his car and endedup leaving the car in a nearby field, where he took off on foot.
"I could see the gun and something flapping in there, and I could see he's got a lot of drugs and doesn't want to be caught with it," Wilson said.
The gunfire happened in Tracy Weatherford's back yard. One of the shots went right through the suspect's car and hit a pump house. Weatherford and her daughter, Ashley, were in the kitchen when things heated up in their driveway.
"When I realized what was going on and I heard the gunshots, I just kind of grabbed her and ran out this way to the bedroom," Weatherford said.
Thursday morning, a K-9 unit recovered a weapon, a cell phone and an undisclosed amount of crack cocaine.
Brown was charged with assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer.
No one was injured in the incident.
The Sheriff's Office has eight of its cars outfitted with the cameras. This is the first gunfire incident a Wake County Sheriff's car has caught on tape.
