Chief Warrant Officer Stan L. Harriman, a father of two, died as the result of enemy fire in Afghanistan. His wife, Sheila, said her husband died doing what he loved.
"He was so excited about being a part of this that he trained for 16 years. All he wanted to do was fulfill what he trained to do, and he loved not just being a soldier, but he loved his country," she said.
Harriman, 34, was a Gulf War veteran. The Special Forces soldier also served in Haiti. He was so dedicated to his job that when he came home from Nigeria in December after suffering malaria, he stayed just six days before deploying in the war on terrorism.
Harriman's twin brother, Steve, said even though they come from a military family and know what to expect, no one would have expected this.
"He had been gone for so long that I don't even remember if I told him that I was proud of him and loved him. I hope that he knows that," Steve said.
"He wrote me an e-mail that said he was so excited about doing this. This is what I trained 16 years to do," Sheila said. "He said, 'Don't worry about me, the team and I will take care of each other, and I will be home soon.'"
Harriman, who was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, lived in Wade, N.C. Plans for his funeral are pending.
