Nash County Sheriff deputies said Evelyn Pearl Spencer may have been asleep in her house on Noah Road near Middlesex when someone broke into her back window late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Investigators do not know if anything was stolen, but they said there is evidence of some kind of attack inside the house.
Investigators said Spencer left her home, and walked about 50 yards from her home. Spencer was found by a neighbor in a nearby field, bruised, beaten and freezing. Spencer later died at Wilson Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.
"We believe that she was trying to go for help and she started toward some neighbors' houses, but she didn't make it," Nash County Sheriff Jimmy Grimes said.
Family members described Spencer as a loving person.
"All of her brothers and sisters would do anything for her, and in return, she would do the same for us," said Percy Price, Spencer's brother. "She was a good Christian lady."
"There were 10 of us, and we were real close," said Elton Price, Spencer's brother.
Police believe the suspect may be driving a dark colored Mazda RX-7 low-rider.
Her family is now offering a $15,000 reward to anyone with any information about the crime. If you have any information, you are asked to contact the Nash County Sheriff's Office at

Authorities said Spencer's house was burglarized last month. Police found the suspect in that case and talked to him. He said he has nothing to do with this incident.
