Thirty-five homes in Rocky Mount will, one day, house a flood victim or other low-income family. Ebenezer Missionary Baptist church is paying for the work.
"We accepted the challenge feeling that the Lord would enable us to find the resources to be able to help people," said Rev. Thomas L. Walker of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church.
The church also got some help from RBC Centura Bank, which issued a grant of $400,000. The money will help pay for contractors who are already charging less than they could for the work.
"You try to give a little bit back, you know, and you'll get it back in the end, so just go ahead and do it right the first time and you don't have to worry about it," contractor Carvent Webb said.
The city is also donating materials that were used temporarily after the flood. Church leaders said they are willing to rent some of the homes, but the goal is to sell them.
Each tenant or owner will be required to take classes on how to care for the property.
