The 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade is part of a specially trained anti-terrorist group. Right now, about 100 of the brigade's Marines are guarding the American Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. They are also in charge of protecting dignitaries like Sen. John Edwards and Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Officials said they are breaking new ground in Marine history every day.
"We can't lose sight of the fact that they are the sons of mothers and fathers and they themselves are fathers and husbands," said Brig. Gen. Douglas O'Dell of the anti-terrorism brigade.
O'Dell said members of the brigade hear gunshots every day, but they have not fired their weapons yet.
