Hundreds of kids waited Saturday in front of a sea of handlebars. Moses Mathis continued a 9-year tradition of fixing used bikes and giving them away to children whose parents cannot afford to buy new ones.
"This is my ninth year of doing this. It's grown from one bike to about 648 bikes," he said. "We are going to work on bikes until about 9 o'clock Christmas Eve and I'm hoping that we can get out another 75 to 100 bikes."
Volunteers provided helmets to the young bike riders.
"It's just a lot of smiles and a lot of just happiness that we are making just so many young kids really smile during the Christmas holiday," Mathis said.
Donations for repairing bikes were down about 20 percent from last year, but Mathis still hopes to repair and give away 100 more bikes by Christmas Eve.
