The poster is hanging on the wall inside A.J. Brown's apartment, and it got her a visit from the Secret Service. Brown said she got the poster last winter when President George W. Bush was inaugurated.
The 19-year-old Durham community college student said she is not anti-American, just a misunderstood political activist.
"I understand it was their job, but they do need to realize that a poster is part of free speech, not a threat, and it's in my apartment," she said.
Brown suspects a Durham police officer caught a glimpse of the poster when he came to her apartment for a loud music complaint. The Police Department said it did not start the investigation, the Secret Service did.
