Voter turnout was a little less than what Board of Election officials had hoped for, as only about 11 percent of registered voters showed up at the polls.
Both of the top vote-getters for the mayoral race were on hand as results came in at the old county courthouse.
Incumbent Nick Tennyson watched with his sons, while long-time county commissioner Bill Bell chatted with supporters.
The two men congratulated each other and promised an exciting race.
"You're going to expect to see a lot more discussion on the issues. You're going to see a lot more in terms of what Bill Bell can provide in terms of leadership for the city of Durham and how we'll do that," Bell said.
"I'm focusing on talking to people about priorities they had, priorities I've been working on for four years and the results we've achieved," Tennyson said. "I'm trying to remind people we've come a long way since 1997 and I believe I can take us even further."
Some of the top issues in the campaign will be crime and downtown development.
Tuesday's results are unofficial. Official results will be certified on Friday, Oct. 12.
